What is HeyGen?
HeyGen is an AI video platform for creating scripted avatar presentations and translating existing videos. It is useful to evaluate for short training or product explainers when the message is already approved. Start with a short segment and inspect pronunciation, timing and visual delivery; Free-plan videos are watermarked and limited to non-commercial use, and other options depend on the plan.
When avatar video is useful
HeyGen combines a text-based video editor with AI avatars. The core workflow is to bring a script, select a presenter and create a video you can inspect. For an onboarding explanation or product introduction, the input should include approved wording, names and a clear audience rather than a vague request to make a promotional video.
The platform also offers translation of existing footage with speech and lip-sync tools. This is a different decision from making a new avatar video: you need to check the translated meaning as well as the presentation. Use a short, representative passage first, especially if the script contains names, technical vocabulary or a call to action.
Try one short presenter script
Suggested workflow: write a short explanation of one feature in plain language. Choose an available stock avatar for the first trial and keep the script small enough to listen through carefully. Preview the result and note any word that needs a spelling or phrasing adjustment.
Check that captions and spoken language agree, then look for distracting delivery or timing around important phrases. If you need another language, have someone who understands it review a sample before creating the full version. Compare the time needed for corrections with simply recording the explanation yourself. A polished preview is useful evidence only for that example, not a guarantee about every script or language.
HeyGen free access and credits
The current Free plan lists three videos per month, up to one minute each, with a HeyGen watermark and only limited trials of premium features. HeyGen’s Terms of Service limit Free-plan output to personal, non-commercial and internal-evaluation use, so it should not go into advertising or client work; Creator, Pro and Business output falls under terms that do not restrict commercial use.
Paid plans list credit allowances and different video duration, resolution and avatar features. Before subscribing, check the exact mode you plan to use, its credit consumption and export requirements. Avoid estimating capacity only from the subscription name. If the job starts with recorded speech and mainly needs editing, compare Descript; if it starts with a presenter script, evaluate HeyGen on that specific workflow.
