The short answer: Midjourney for image volume and styling, ChatGPT for images inside other work

Choose Midjourney if images are the main job: plans are measured in GPU time, Standard and above include unlimited Relax image generation, and V8.2 adds personalization and a dedicated edit model. Choose ChatGPT if images are one part of broader work such as writing or research, since even the Free plan includes limited image creation and Pro advertises unlimited and faster creation.

Scope and evidence

Task: creating and editing images for personal or small-business use. We compared Midjourney's Basic, Standard, Pro and Mega plans with ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro, not APIs or enterprise plans. Prices are in US dollars from Midjourney's plan comparison and update posts and from ChatGPT's pricing page, OpenAI's Images in ChatGPT help article and its Terms of Use, checked on October 27, 2026.

We compared published plan and help pages only and generated no images for it. ChatGPT's pricing page describes image limits in words such as limited and more rather than numbers, so exact ChatGPT image counts are not established.

Compare the same criteria

Each criterion lists both products from their own pages, then what the difference means.

  • Entry price. Midjourney: Basic at $10 a month, no free plan listed on its plan page. ChatGPT: Free at $0 with limited image creation, Go at $8 a month. What this means: ChatGPT is the free way to start.
  • Generation volume. Midjourney: 3.3 Fast GPU hours a month on Basic up to 60 on Mega, unlimited Relax images from Standard at $30, extra GPU time at $4 an hour. ChatGPT: limited on Free, more on Go, unlimited and faster on Pro, subject to abuse guardrails. What this means: Midjourney states its limits in hours; ChatGPT states them qualitatively.
  • Editing. Midjourney: edit model with instruction edits, up to four reference images, inpainting and outpainting for V8.1 and V8.2. ChatGPT: on all plans you can upload or select an image and describe changes, highlight an area with the Select tool, change the aspect ratio and use Undo and Redo, also on mobile. What this means: both support targeted edits; ChatGPT warns selections are not always precise.
  • Privacy of outputs. Midjourney: Stealth Mode keeps images private only on Pro and Mega. ChatGPT: images are saved to the Images library in your account, and OpenAI's Terms of Use let you opt out of training on your content; a public gallery is not described on the pages checked. What this means: on lower Midjourney plans, images are not kept private.
  • Commercial use. Midjourney: general commercial terms on all plans, but companies with more than $1,000,000 in yearly gross revenue must use Pro or Mega. ChatGPT: under OpenAI's Terms of Use you own the output; no plan or revenue threshold is listed. What this means: larger companies pay at least $60 a month on Midjourney.
  • Beyond images. Midjourney: video generation, with SD video in Relax on Pro and Mega. ChatGPT: chat, deep research, voice, Codex and Work on the same plans. What this means: ChatGPT covers more non-image work per subscription.

Which fits your real work?

Producing dozens of style variations for a mood board every week. Midjourney Standard fits, with unlimited Relax images and personalization tuned to your ratings.

Adding one illustration to a blog post you are already drafting with an assistant. ChatGPT fits, since image creation sits in the same conversation, starting on the Free plan.

A company with more than $1 million in yearly revenue that wants private images. Midjourney Pro fits its own terms, with Stealth Mode and the required commercial tier.

Cost of getting the work done

Monthly billing: Midjourney costs $10 for Basic, $30 for Standard, $60 for Pro and $120 for Mega, or 20% less with annual billing, for example $96 a year for Basic. ChatGPT costs $0 for Free, $8 for Go, $20 for Plus and from $100 for Pro.

For image volume alone, Midjourney Standard at $30 is the lowest listed plan with unlimited Relax images. On ChatGPT, unlimited image creation is advertised only on Pro from $100, while Plus offers more complex and accurate image creation without a stated count.

Try both on the same small task

Suggested comparison: generate the same image on both, then make one targeted edit.

  • The sign text reads exactly OPEN 8 AM.
  • Light falls from the left in every image.
  • After asking to change only the napkin to dark green, the rest of the image stays the same.
  • Note how many attempts each needed; one run is a signal, not a ranking.

Decision checklist

Use the conditions that apply to you. Plan details are in our Midjourney profile and our ChatGPT profile.

  • If you want to start for free, use ChatGPT Free.
  • If you generate many images every week, look at Midjourney Standard or above.
  • If you need private outputs, Midjourney requires Pro or Mega.
  • If your company earns over $1 million a year, Midjourney requires Pro or Mega.
  • If images are a small part of writing or research work, ChatGPT keeps them in one tool.
