An AI answer engine for exploring questions through web research, citations and follow-up queries. Most useful when you treat the answer as the beginning of a source-checking workflow.

What is Perplexity?

Perplexity’s Answer Engine combines web research with a conversational response and source links. You can begin with a question, inspect the references and narrow the task through follow-ups. This profile focuses on that research workflow; the broader product family also includes Computer, the Comet browser and a developer API platform.

Its appeal is the short path from an unfamiliar topic to a set of pages worth reading. The editorial judgment still belongs to the researcher: which sources are authoritative, which claims are current and which differences actually matter to the decision.

Choose depth around the question

Perplexity describes Pro Search as a deeper process that performs multiple searches and synthesizes the results. Its documentation also describes Research mode for more involved investigations. Access and allowances vary by subscription, so a screenshot or tutorial from another account may show different choices.

A simple factual query and a procurement brief need different amounts of work. For the latter, write down your criteria before searching: the required feature, intended use, geographic constraints and evidence date. This helps you assess whether a long answer has actually addressed the question.

Where it can fit your day

We would shortlist Perplexity for writers collecting primary sources, product teams mapping an unfamiliar category and people comparing a small number of tools. Our preferred output is a research note with claim-level links and unresolved questions, rather than a confident ranking with unexplained scores.

Paid plans expand file analysis and other capabilities. If a task includes an uploaded brief, keep its requirements separate from claims found on the web. That distinction makes the final recommendation easier to audit and prevents a supplied assumption from quietly becoming an external fact.

Check the evidence before you reuse it

Open the source attached to each important claim. Confirm that the page supports the exact feature, plan and date being discussed. A current-looking answer can still cite an older announcement, and several articles may repeat the same original claim. Our guide below turns this check into a repeatable comparison workflow.

The official plan guide treats API access as a separate offering from the consumer app. Evaluate those costs separately if you want automated research inside your own portal. This page summarizes public documentation and our editorial assessment; it does not report a hands-on accuracy benchmark.

What stands out

  • Web-grounded answers with links to supporting sources
  • Follow-up questions within a research conversation
  • Deeper search and Research modes, subject to plan limits
  • File analysis and developer API offerings

Before you choose

  • A citation is a route to evidence, not proof that every claim is correct.
  • Search depth, models and file allowances depend on the plan.
  • API usage is separate from the consumer web subscription.
