What is ChatGPT Work?

ChatGPT Work is an agent mode inside ChatGPT that takes a goal and works through it using your files, connected apps and, on desktop, local apps and a built-in browser, to produce a finished document, deck, spreadsheet or analysis. Use it for a task with a clear deliverable, such as a slide built from a data room. On web and mobile it needs a paid plan.

What can you do with it?

OpenAI describes Chat as the place for answers and short drafts, and ChatGPT Work for tasks with a clear outcome: a brief, a deck, an analysis, a recurring update or a file you can review. One example in OpenAI's guide is adding a slide to an existing account-review deck: Work reads a data room and a Slack channel through plugins, then builds the slide in the deck's template.

Other documented uses are recurring work, such as scheduling a weekly report, and longer research that combines several sources. On the desktop app for macOS and Windows, Work can also use local files and apps and a built-in browser; computer use requires installing a plugin and, on macOS, granting Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions.

Try it on a small task

Suggested workflow: in the desktop app, switch to Work and give it one folder with three or four source files, for example meeting notes and a spreadsheet, plus a short instruction such as: create a five-slide summary deck, list open questions on the last slide, and stop for my approval before saving. Use Plan mode so you can check the steps first.

When it finishes, check that every number on the slides appears in your files, that it used only the folder you chose, and how much plan usage the task consumed. OpenAI suggests choosing GPT-6 Astra for demanding final files and GPT-6.1 Sol or Luna for simpler work.

Pricing and access

OpenAI says ChatGPT Work is available on every plan in the macOS and Windows desktop apps, and on the web and mobile for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. On the ChatGPT pricing page, Free and Go list limited Work access in the desktop app, Plus ($20 a month) lists expanded access on desktop, web and mobile, and Pro (from $100 a month) lists longer Work sessions. Exact task limits per plan are not established from the pages we checked.

OpenAI notes that longer or more complex tasks may use more credits, so check your plan usage before a large task. According to OpenAI's Codex pricing page, ChatGPT Work and Codex share usage, with the same pricing, credits and limits. Plugins connect to more than 1,400 tools, and ChatGPT Space, for shared pages, is limited to Pro, Business and Enterprise. Computer use is available only in supported regions.

What stands out

  • Plan mode to review a step-by-step plan before work starts
  • Plugins for Slack, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars and CRMs
  • Local files, apps and a built-in browser in the desktop app
  • One-time and recurring scheduled tasks

Before you choose

  • Web and mobile access needs Plus or a higher plan.
  • Larger tasks may use more of your plan's usage, shared with Codex.
  • Desktop computer use can change app and system state, so review permission prompts.
