What is Cursor?

Cursor is an AI coding agent and code editor that turns a described software task into code changes you can review. Start with a small bug or feature and treat the result as a patch to inspect, not code that is ready to ship. Cloud agents and AI code review need the Premium plan or higher, and third-party models are billed separately.

What can you build with Cursor?

Cursor brings agent-assisted development into the coding workflow. You can describe a change, provide relevant files and inspect the resulting code. This is useful when you know the expected behaviour but would otherwise spend time locating the implementation or repeating a familiar edit across a project.

Its cloud agents extend that workflow to work carried out in separate environments. Cursor also offers a terminal interface and GitHub code review features. Treat these as different ways to handle work: an interactive change benefits from immediate feedback, while a clearly specified background task needs an explicit definition of done.

Try one small code change

Suggested workflow: choose a small issue with an observable result, such as validating an empty search query. Start from a clean branch and write down the current behaviour, expected behaviour and files that should remain outside the task. Ask for a plan before allowing a broad change.

Inspect the proposed scope, then review the patch file by file. Run the existing checks that cover the changed behaviour and try the user-facing path yourself. A useful first evaluation records how much correction the patch needed, whether it introduced unrelated changes and whether you can explain the final implementation. Keep that evidence before delegating a larger task.

Cursor pricing and access

The current pricing page offers a Free plan with limited agent and chat use. Paid individual plans start at $8 per month (Plus), which includes Grok models only. Cloud agents, AI code reviews and third-party models start at Premium ($30 per month), and third-party usage is billed separately at API list price rather than included in the subscription. Prices exclude taxes.

Estimate a typical week of use from a few representative tasks rather than the number of prompts alone, because the included allowance refreshes weekly. Check the live plan comparison, model selection and usage screen together before enabling extended background work. If you mainly want assistance within an existing GitHub workflow, include GitHub Copilot in your shortlist and compare both on the same small repository task.

What stands out

  • Coding agents alongside an interactive editor
  • Cloud agents with separate working environments
  • Terminal and GitHub review workflows

Before you choose

  • Review the diff and run project checks before merging.
  • Model choice and third-party usage can affect the bill.
  • Choose the permissions and project data you share deliberately.
