What is Factory Droid?

Factory Droid is a coding agent from Factory that works with models from several labs and runs as a desktop app, a terminal UI and an SDK. Use it to hand off multi-step development work such as a migration or a bug fix across many files. Version 1.0, released October 29, 2026, makes programmatic tool calling the default; benchmark claims are Factory's own.

What can you do with it?

Droid takes a development task, plans it and carries it out with tools such as reading files, editing and running commands. Factory's examples include reading hundreds of files to find the few that mention a topic, triaging dozens of Linear tickets and running a database migration in steps. You can choose the model yourself or let the Factory Router pick a mix.

Version 1.0 makes programmatic tool calling the default. Instead of calling tools one at a time, the model writes a JavaScript program that runs in a sandbox without its own file, network or system access and makes the calls, so instructions and history are sent once. In Factory's illustrated example this cut model calls from ten to five for the same fifteen tool calls.

Factory's benchmark claims

Factory ran Terminal-Bench 4 from October 23 to 28, 2026 with three trials per task. With GPT-6.1 Sol at high reasoning it reports Droid at 57.6% for $0.79 per task against 54.0% for Codex; with Claude Opus 5.5 it reports 65.2% at $4.73 against 57.6% for Claude Code. Some Opus trials blocked by content moderation were rerun on Claude Opus 5. These are vendor-run results that AppFor.ai has not reproduced.

Try it on a small task

Suggested workflow: install the terminal UI or desktop app, open a repository you can reset with git, and give Droid one contained task, such as updating a deprecated API call everywhere it appears and running the tests. Use the model you already pay for so the comparison with your current agent is fair.

Inspect the diff for unrelated changes, confirm the tests pass, and compare how long the task took and what it cost with your usual tool on the same task.

Pricing and access

Factory's pricing page lists Pro at $20 a month for individuals, Plus at $100 with about five times Pro's usage and access to Factory-managed cloud computers, and Max at $200 with about ten times Pro's usage. Teams costs $60 a month per team plus $40 per seat for up to ten seats. Business and Enterprise plans add SSO, zero data retention, audit logs and on-premise options on request.

Droid 1.0 is available as a desktop app for macOS and Windows and as a terminal UI. Developers can build on the same harness with the Droid SDK from Node, holding multi-turn sessions and adding custom tools over MCP.

What stands out

  • Script tool: the model writes sandboxed JavaScript that runs many tool calls in one request
  • Works with closed and open-weight models, plus the Factory Router
  • Desktop app for macOS and Windows, terminal UI and @factory/droid-sdk
  • Cloud and local background agents

Before you choose

  • Benchmark results are Factory's own runs on its chosen settings.
  • Usage limits are described relative to Pro, not in absolute numbers.
  • SSO, audit logs and data residency need Business or Enterprise.
