Who this list is for

This list is for developers and technical hobbyists choosing an AI tool to write, fix and review code in their own projects in October 2026. The useful distinction is not which model is smartest but where the tool works, in your editor, your terminal, GitHub or the cloud, and how its usage is billed. The order below follows that distinction, from terminal agents to editor tools to pay-per-token models, not a quality ranking.

How tools qualify

Each tool had to meet three conditions on its official pages, checked on October 26, 2026: it can edit code across multiple files as an agent, not only complete lines; it has a documented individual plan or pay-as-you-go access; and it publishes its price. We did not run hands-on tests, so nothing here is a measured quality, speed or accuracy result. Benchmarks published by vendors are not used to rank the tools.

Claude Code: a terminal-first agent from Anthropic

Task fit: working on a codebase from the terminal, with the same engine in VS Code, JetBrains, a desktop app and the web. Capability: Anthropic documents reading the codebase, editing files, running commands, git commits and pull requests, MCP connections, parallel agents and scheduled tasks. Access: included from Claude Pro at $20 a month, or $17 with annual billing; not on the Free plan. Limitation: usage limits apply and per-plan counts are not published on the pricing page; the desktop app requires a paid subscription. Choose it if you want an agent that lives in your terminal and also runs in the cloud.

OpenAI Codex: coding agent bundled with ChatGPT plans

Task fit: coding in the ChatGPT desktop app, CLI, IDE extension or cloud, if you already pay for ChatGPT. Capability: on Plus, Codex runs on the web, CLI, IDE extension and iOS, with automatic code review and Slack integration. Access: Free and Go include GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app, subject to rollout; Plus costs $20 a month with GPT-6.1 Sol and Luna; Pro is $100, $200 or $500. Limitation: OpenAI estimates only 5 to 45 local GPT-6 Astra messages per five hours on Plus, and Codex shares usage with ChatGPT Work. Choose it if ChatGPT is already your main assistant.

GitHub Copilot: broad editor coverage and GitHub integration

Task fit: completions and agent mode inside the editor you already use, plus work assigned on GitHub. Capability: GitHub lists VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Xcode, Neovim, Eclipse, Zed and more; Pro adds a cloud agent that opens pull requests and code review. Access: Free includes 2,000 completions a month and limited chat and agent usage; Pro is $10, Pro+ $39 and Max $100 a month, with $15, $70 and $200 in monthly AI credits. Limitation: agent mode, code review and the cloud agent consume credits; Pro lists access to third-party agents such as Claude Code and Codex, but delegating cloud tasks to them, a preview feature, starts at Pro+. Choose it if you want to stay in your current editor at a low paid entry price ($10).

Cursor: an AI code editor, now billed with Grok

Task fit: an editor built around an agent, for people willing to switch editors. Capability: an agent on every plan, with cloud agents and automations, code hosting through Origin and AI code reviews through Bugbot from Premium. Access: Free with limited agent requests; Plus $8 a month with Grok models only; Premium $30, Super $100 and Ultra $200 a month, each including Grok Chat, Imagine and Build. Limitation: third-party models such as Claude or GPT are billed separately at API list price on top of the plan. Choose it if you want an agent-first editor and are comfortable with usage-based costs for non-Grok models.

Kimi K3: an open-weight model for your own agent setup

Task fit: running a frontier-class model inside Claude Code or other agents through an API, or self-hosting it. Capability: 1,048,576-token context, native image and video understanding, and Anthropic- and OpenAI-compatible endpoints; weights are published under the Kimi K3 License. Access: Kimi API at $3 per million input and $15 per million output tokens, or Kimi Code on Kimi membership plans from $19 a month. Limitation: you assemble the tooling yourself, and long agent sessions can add up on per-token billing. Choose it if you want an open-weight model and control over your tools. Our Kimi K3 Claude Code guide shows the setup.

DeepSeek API: the lowest listed token prices here

Task fit: high-volume or budget-limited agent work through the API. Capability: deepseek-flash and deepseek-v4-pro with 1M context, up to 384K output tokens, Anthropic-format endpoints and integration guides for Claude Code and Codex. Access: deepseek-flash costs $0.15 per million input and $0.60 per million output tokens off-peak, double at peak hours; deepseek-v4-pro $0.66 and $1.98 off-peak. Limitation: deepseek-v4-pro does not support vision, and Search and Fetch calls made by agents start costing $0.75 per 1,000 requests on November 1, 2026, Beijing time. Choose it if cost per token is your main constraint.

How to choose

Start from where you work and how you want to pay, then try one small, reversible task, such as fixing a single failing test, before committing to a plan.

  • You live in the terminal and want cloud tasks too: Claude Code.
  • You already pay for ChatGPT: Codex is included.
  • You want to stay in your current editor at the lowest monthly price: GitHub Copilot Pro at $10.
  • You want an agent-first editor: Cursor, budgeting separately for non-Grok models.
  • You want open weights or the lowest token costs in your own setup: Kimi K3 or DeepSeek through their APIs.

Sources and checked scope

All prices are monthly US list prices for individual plans before tax, taken from each vendor's official pricing or documentation page on October 26, 2026. Business and Enterprise plans were out of scope. Usage limits change often, so check the vendor's usage dashboard after your first week. For details, see the linked profiles and comparisons below.
