The short answer: Gemini for Google apps and storage, Grok for live X search
Choose Gemini if your files and mail live in Google: paid Google AI plans put Gemini in Gmail and other Google apps and add cloud storage, from $4.99 a month. Choose Grok if you follow news as it breaks on X, want image and video generation in one chat, or already value X Premium benefits; Grok Plus costs $8 a month. Neither page lets us rank answer quality.
Scope and evidence
Task: everyday personal use, meaning writing, research on current topics, working with files, images and video, and some coding. We compared the consumer apps and their individual plans, not the Gemini API, the xAI API or business plans. Prices are monthly in US dollars before tax, from the United States versions of Google's Gemini subscriptions page and xAI's Grok plans and product pages, checked on October 26, 2026.
This is a source-based comparison. We did not run the same prompts through both apps, so nothing here is a measured quality or speed result. Google AI plans are only available for ages 18 and over, and Google says Plus, Pro and Ultra are offered in more than 140 countries and territories.
Compare the same criteria
For each criterion: what Google documents for Gemini, what xAI documents for Grok, and what that means for the task. Not established means the checked pages do not say.
- Free plan. Gemini: Flash-Lite model, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, limited Google Flow and 15 GB of storage. Grok: free to try on the web and in the apps, with limits not published on the pages we checked. What this means: Gemini's free tier is easier to plan around on paper.
- Current events. Gemini: Deep Research is listed from the Free plan; live X coverage is not established. Grok: searches the web and X live, with citations and real-time X integration for trends and breaking news. What this means: if X posts are your main source, Grok is built for that; open the citations either way.
- Documents and everyday apps. Gemini: Gemini in Gmail and Vids from Plus, and in Gmail, Docs, Vids and more from Pro, in select languages. Grok: a canvas for long-form writing and file and PDF analysis inside Grok. What this means: Gemini works where Google users already write; Grok keeps the work in its own app.
- Images and video. Gemini: image generation on Free, video generation from Plus, and Google Flow credits from 200 on Plus to 1,000 on Pro. Grok: Grok Imagine for images up to 2K and text-to-video up to 15 seconds at 720p, with 1080p video from Super. What this means: both offer video on paid plans, but they meter it differently, so compare on your own clip length.
- Coding. Gemini: from Pro, higher limits for Jules, Google's asynchronous coding agent in beta, and entry rate limits in Google Antigravity. Grok: code generation in chat, Grok Build and access through Cursor in Plus's shared pool, and cloud agents, code hosting and AI code reviews from Premium. What this means: both reserve their agent tooling for paid tiers; output quality is not established.
- Usage limits. Gemini: compute-based limits that refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly cap, with 2x Free usage on Plus, 4x on Pro and 5x or 20x Pro on Ultra; AI credits can extend them. Grok: one usage pool across all products, with Premium at 4x, Super at 15x and Ultra at 50x Plus usage. What this means: neither publishes message counts, so only the multipliers can be compared.
- Bundled extras. Gemini: storage from 400 GB on Plus, 5 TB on Pro and from 20 TB on Ultra, plus YouTube Premium Lite on Pro. Grok: X benefits on every paid plan, from fewer timeline ads and a checkmark on Plus to ad-free scrolling on most surfaces from Premium. What this means: each bundle saves money only if you would pay for those extras anyway.
Which fits your real work?
Replying to a long Gmail thread with a summary and a draft. Gemini fits from Plus, because Gemini in Gmail is listed there. Grok can summarise text you paste in, but an in-mail integration is not listed on its pages.
Following reaction to a product launch during the day. Grok fits, since live X search with citations is a documented focus. Gemini can research the web, but whether it reads X posts in real time is not established.
Making a short promotional clip for social media. Either fits on a paid plan: Gemini from Plus with Flow credits, Grok with Imagine and 1080p output from Super. Neither is a supported choice if you need long-form video edited from your own footage; use a dedicated video tool.
Cost of getting the work done
Gemini, monthly: Free; Google AI Plus $4.99; Google AI Pro $19.99; Google AI Ultra $99.99 for 5x Pro usage or $199.99 for 20x. Grok, monthly: Plus $8; Premium $30, with 50% off the first month; Super $100; Ultra $200, each with a first-month discount at our check.
Google's page says Gemini 4 Argon is included from Google AI Pro and in Ultra, not in Plus. For a typical paid step-up, Gemini Pro at $19.99 compares with Grok Premium at $30 after the first month. Both pages note that taxes are not included and that prices can change, and Grok's page says third-party models in Cursor are not included. Annual pricing is offered by Grok, but we compare monthly prices only so the periods match.
Try both on the same small task
Suggested comparison, not a test we have run: on the free versions, ask both the same question about a news story from the last 24 hours that you can check yourself, then score the answers with the checks below.
- Every bullet has a working link to a source that says what the bullet says.
- Dates fall inside the last 24 hours, or the answer says they do not.
- Unconfirmed claims are labelled rather than stated as fact.
- Note whether the sources are posts on X, news sites or both; one run is a signal, not a ranking.
Decision checklist
Check these conditions against your own use before paying. Plan details are in our Google Gemini profile and our Grok profile.
- If you use Gmail and Docs every day, Gemini's paid plans work inside them.
- If X is where you follow your field, Grok's live X search and X benefits add value.
- If you mainly need more storage, Google AI plans include it; Grok does not list storage.
- Google AI plans require you to be 18 or older, so younger users need another option.
- If you need either model in your own software, compare the Gemini API and xAI API pricing instead.
