The short answer: Copilot if you want Office plus storage, Claude for documents and code across tools
Choose Microsoft Copilot through Microsoft 365 if you want Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook desktop apps, cloud storage and Copilot in one bill, from $9.99 a month. Choose Claude if you want Docs, Slides and Design on a free plan, Claude Code for programming, or Claude inside Microsoft 365 and Chrome from $20 a month. Differences in writing quality are not established.
Scope and evidence
Task: individual work on documents, spreadsheets, presentations, email and research, plus coding for some readers. We compared Claude's Free, Pro and Max plans with the free Copilot app and the Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium and Pro plans that include Copilot. Business and Enterprise plans and the APIs are out of scope. Prices are monthly US list prices before tax from Anthropic's Claude pricing page and Microsoft's Copilot for individuals page, checked on October 26, 2026.
This is a source-based comparison; we did not run the same tasks in both products. Microsoft describes several usage levels, such as higher than free, extensive and highest, without publishing counts, so limits below are relative.
Compare the same criteria
Each criterion shows Claude's documented position, Copilot's documented position and the practical effect. Not established means the checked pages do not say.
- Free plan. Claude: chat, web search, file creation with code execution, memory, connectors, artifacts, up to 5 projects, and Claude Design, Slides and Docs. Copilot: a free version you can try; its limits and features are not itemised on the page we checked. What this means: Claude's free feature set is documented in detail; Copilot's is not.
- Office documents. Claude: Claude for Microsoft 365 and Claude for Microsoft Outlook from Pro. Copilot: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook desktop apps with Copilot from Microsoft 365 Personal, plus Copilot in Teams. What this means: Copilot plans include the Office apps themselves; Claude Pro assumes you already have them.
- Research and analysis. Claude: Research from Pro, web search on every plan. Copilot: Researcher and Analyst agents, exclusive to Premium and Pro, with limited agentic usage on Premium and the highest on Pro. What this means: both put deep research behind paid tiers; Copilot's starts at $19.99.
- Multi-step tasks. Claude: task hand-off and scheduling and Claude in Chrome from Pro. Copilot: Cowork, described as a collaborator that plans and completes multi-step tasks, listed among Premium and Pro features. What this means: both offer agent-style work on paid plans; reliability is not established.
- Coding. Claude: Claude Code from Pro, not on Free. Copilot: coding features are not listed on the consumer plan pages we checked; GitHub Copilot is a separate product. What this means: for programming, Claude Pro includes a coding agent; Microsoft 365 plans do not list one.
- Images and media. Claude: image generation is not listed on its pricing page. Copilot: AI image creation and AI-generated audio in English, with higher usage than free on Personal and extensive usage on Premium; AI Restyle for photos in OneDrive is listed among the features exclusive to Premium and Pro. What this means: for image creation, only Copilot lists it.
- Storage and sharing. Claude: no storage bundle listed. Copilot: 1 TB on Personal, 2 TB shared on Family and Premium, 5 TB on Pro; Family covers up to 6 people, but AI is for the subscription owner only. What this means: Microsoft's price includes storage, while Copilot on Family plans serves one person.
Which fits your real work?
Summarising a long email thread and drafting replies in Outlook. Copilot fits if you also want the Office apps and storage, from Personal at $9.99. Claude fits if you already have Office: Claude for Microsoft Outlook is listed from Pro.
Building a slide deck from research notes. Either fits: Claude lists Slides on its Free plan, and Copilot works in PowerPoint from Personal. If the deck must start from deep research, compare Claude Pro's Research with Copilot's Researcher on Premium.
Fixing a bug in a personal project. Claude Pro fits with Claude Code. Neither Microsoft 365 plan lists a coding agent, so Copilot is not a supported choice here; GitHub Copilot is the Microsoft product for that task.
Cost of getting the work done
Claude, monthly billing: Free; Pro $20, or $17 a month with annual billing ($200 up front); Max from $100. Microsoft 365 with Copilot, monthly billing: Personal $9.99, Family $12.99, Premium $19.99 and Pro $99.99, with Pro billed monthly only and up to 17% savings on yearly billing for the other plans. Personal, Family and Premium offer a one-month free trial.
At the same $20 level, Claude Pro adds Claude Code and Research, while Microsoft 365 Premium adds the Office apps, 2 TB of storage and Researcher and Analyst. Claude Max includes $100 to $200 a month in API credits for the Claude Platform. Both state that usage limits apply.
Try both on the same small task
Suggested comparison, not a test we have run: in Claude Free and the free Copilot, give both the same set of meeting notes you are allowed to share and ask for an action list and a follow-up email.
- Every action item appears in the notes, with the right owner.
- Missing owners and dates are marked not stated rather than guessed.
- The email stays near 100 words and matches the action list.
- Note how many corrections each draft needed; a single run shows a tendency, not a ranking.
Decision checklist
Check these against your own setup. More detail is in our Claude profile and our Microsoft Copilot profile.
- If you do not yet pay for Office, a Microsoft 365 plan bundles the apps, storage and Copilot.
- If you already have Office and want an assistant inside it plus coding, Claude Pro lists both.
- If you code, Claude Code needs Claude Pro; Microsoft 365 plans do not list a coding agent.
- If you need AI images, Copilot lists image creation; Claude's pricing page does not.
- If several family members need AI, note that Microsoft 365 Family gives AI to the owner only.
