The short answer: Cowork for documents, Claude Code for code

Use Claude Cowork when the result is a document, spreadsheet, presentation or researched summary and you do not want a terminal. Use Claude Code when the result is a change to a codebase: it reads the repository, edits files and runs commands and tests.

Scope and evidence

Task: delegating multi-step work to a Claude agent. Facts come from the Claude Help Center article Get started with Claude Cowork and the Claude Code documentation overview and costs pages, read on October 31, 2026.

AppFor.ai has not tested Claude Cowork or Claude Code hands-on for this comparison.

Compare the same criteria

Each line compares how Cowork and Claude Code handle the same aspect of delegated work.

  • Audience. Cowork: knowledge work beyond coding. Claude Code: developers. What this means: pick by the output you need.
  • Where it runs. Cowork: in the cloud on Anthropic's servers, reaching local files and the browser through Claude Desktop. Claude Code: terminal, IDE, desktop app and web. What this means: Cowork keeps working with your laptop closed.
  • Outputs. Cowork: Excel files with formulas, PowerPoint decks, formatted documents, scheduled tasks. Claude Code: code changes, commits and pull requests. What this means: little overlap in deliverables.
  • Plans. Cowork: paid plans only (Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, Enterprise). Claude Code: paid plans, Console accounts or supported cloud providers. What this means: only Claude Code can be billed per token.
  • Limits. On Team and Enterprise, one seat allowance is shared by chat, Cowork and Claude Code. What this means: heavy use of one reduces the other.

Which fits your real work?

A marketer building a monthly report from spreadsheets and the web. Cowork fits.

A developer fixing a bug across several files. Claude Code fits.

An analyst who writes small scripts to clean data before a report. Start in Cowork; move to Claude Code if the scripts become a maintained project.

Cost of getting the work done

Both are included in paid Claude plans; Pro is $20 a month billed monthly. Neither adds a separate subscription.

Claude Code can also run on API billing, where Anthropic's enterprise average is about $13 per developer per active day.

Try both on the same small task

Suggested check: give each tool the task it is built for and compare effort.

  • Formulas recalculate when you change a value.
  • The chart uses the right columns.
  • The summary figures match the sheet.
  • Note how long the task took and whether it needed your input.

Decision checklist

Use the lines that match your situation. Details are in our Claude Cowork and Claude Code profiles.

  • If the output is a document, sheet or deck, use Cowork.
  • If the output is a code change, use Claude Code.
  • If you need per-token billing, only Claude Code offers it.
  • If tasks must run while your laptop is closed, Cowork does that by default.
  • Watch shared plan limits if you use both heavily.
