The short answer: Design to show the idea, Code to build it

Use Claude Design when you need a visual first version to discuss, such as a screen mockup, slide or one-pager, edited on a canvas and exported as PPTX, PDF or HTML. Use Claude Code when the result must run: it works in your repository, edits files and runs tests. A common path is a design in Claude Design, then a handoff to Claude Code.

Scope and evidence

Task: going from an idea to a screen or a working feature. Facts come from Anthropic's Claude Design product page and the Claude Code documentation overview, read on October 31, 2026, plus our profiles of both products.

AppFor.ai did not run a task in either product for this page.

Compare the same criteria

Each line compares what Claude Design and Claude Code do at the same stage of building a product.

  • Output. Design: visuals on a canvas, exported to PPTX, PDF or HTML. Claude Code: code changes in a repository. What this means: a picture of the product versus the product.
  • Editing. Design: comments, direct text edits, sliders, drag, resize and align. Claude Code: prompts, diffs and tests. What this means: Design suits people who think visually.
  • Design systems. Design: imports from GitHub, design files or uploads. Claude Code: reads the components in your codebase. What this means: both can stay on brand.
  • Plans. Design: every Claude plan including Free, counted against plan limits. Claude Code: paid plans, Console or cloud providers. What this means: Design can be tried for free.
  • Handoff. Design: hand off to Claude Code. Claude Code: implements it. What this means: they work as two stages.

Which fits your real work?

A product manager preparing a screen for a review meeting. Claude Design fits.

A developer implementing an approved screen in a React app. Claude Code fits.

A founder pitching an idea. Design for the slides and mockup, Code later for a prototype.

Cost of getting the work done

Claude Design is included in all plans, Free among them. Claude Code starts with Claude Pro at $20 a month billed monthly.

Both draw on your plan's usage limits, so long iterations in either reduce what is left for the other.

Try both on the same small task

Suggested check: take one screen from idea to code.

  • The mockup uses your colours and components.
  • Handoff to Claude Code produces code that matches the mockup.
  • Tests and lint pass.
  • Note where the handoff lost detail.

Decision checklist

Use the lines that match your situation. Details are in our Claude Design and Claude Code profiles.

  • If you need something to show, use Claude Design.
  • If you need something that runs, use Claude Code.
  • If you are on the Free plan, only Design is available.
  • If you need PPTX or PDF output, Design exports it.
  • Use both in sequence for new features.
