Which fits your task?
The real difference is the default: Perplexity answers every question as a web search with inline citations, while ChatGPT is a general assistant that searches when needed. If you check sources anyway, Perplexity saves steps; if you mostly write or create, ChatGPT covers more.
What we compared
We compared the individual plans for research, quick factual questions, document work and content creation: what the free plan offers, what paid tiers add, which models you can use and the price ladder.
This comparison is based on the official pricing and help pages checked on October 23, 2026. AppFor.ai has not run both tools on the same test set, so there are no scores or winner from our own testing.
The differences that matter
Free plans: Perplexity's free plan gives answers with citations, a very limited number of Pro Searches and limited file uploads. Perplexity picks the model for you; there is no model selection, and Free uses basic models with at most limited access to top models. Asset generation is limited. ChatGPT Free offers unlimited text chats with GPT-6 plus limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and Codex.
Models: Perplexity Pro lets you choose between advanced models from several companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, and switch models within a session. ChatGPT uses OpenAI's own models.
Beyond answers: Perplexity Pro adds deep research, image and video generation and Perplexity Computer for building documents and apps. ChatGPT adds Codex for coding and ChatGPT Work for longer tasks.
Cost and constraints
Perplexity (US prices): Free; Pro at $17 per month billed annually; Max at $167 per month billed annually; Education Pro at $10 per month for verified students and educators. We did not verify monthly-billing prices, so compare them on the checkout page.
ChatGPT (monthly, US prices): Free; Go at $8, which may include ads; Plus at $20; Pro at $100, $200 or $500 depending on the usage tier.
The comparable tiers are Perplexity Pro and ChatGPT Plus. Note that Perplexity's $17 is an annual-billing figure, while ChatGPT's $20 is the monthly price.
