The short answer: Perplexity for cited research, Claude for documents and code
Choose Perplexity if your task starts with a question and ends with an answer you need to verify: every answer carries numbered inline citations, and Pro lets you switch between models from several vendors. Choose Claude if your task ends in a file, a slide deck or code: its Free plan includes Docs and Slides, and Pro adds Claude Code. Both Pro plans cost $17 a month with annual billing.
Scope and evidence
Task: research and knowledge work for one person, meaning finding and checking facts, writing up the result, working with files and, for some readers, coding. We compared the consumer apps and their individual plans, Perplexity Free, Pro and Max against Claude Free, Pro and Max, not the Perplexity or Claude APIs or Enterprise plans. Prices are in US dollars before tax, from Perplexity's Pro page and Anthropic's Claude pricing page, checked on October 26, 2026.
This is a source-based comparison, not a recorded test: we did not run the same prompts through both products. Perplexity's page shows only annual prices, so its monthly prices are not established here.
Compare the same criteria
Each criterion lists what Perplexity documents, what Anthropic documents for Claude, and the effect on the task. Not established means the pages we checked do not say.
- Free plan. Perplexity: a few advanced searches per day and a single default model, according to its FAQ. Claude: chat, web search, file creation with code execution, memory, connectors, artifacts, up to 5 projects, and Claude Design, Slides and Docs. What this means: Perplexity Free suits quick cited lookups; Claude Free covers more document work.
- Citations and source checking. Perplexity: numbered inline citations on every answer, which expand to a snippet from the source, and some premium data sources. Claude: web search on every plan; how its answers display sources is not established from the pricing page. What this means: for checking claims line by line, Perplexity documents the workflow more fully.
- Deeper research. Perplexity: deep research on Pro and expert-level research on Max. Claude: Research from Pro, not on Free. What this means: both put long research behind a paid plan; which produces more accurate reports is not established.
- Choice of models. Perplexity: Pro lets you select between models, and the page lists GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3 and Grok 4.7, while its FAQ still names older models. Claude: Anthropic's own models only, with Opus from Pro and Sonnet and Haiku on every plan. What this means: Perplexity lets you compare vendors in one place; Claude gives you Anthropic's full lineup.
- Documents and files. Perplexity: Pro can create polished documents and apps, with higher file upload limits than Free. Claude: Docs, Slides and Design on Free, Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook from Pro. What this means: if the result must land in Word, PowerPoint or Outlook, Claude documents that path.
- Coding and agents. Perplexity: Computer, an agent that builds apps, tools and documents, with expanded access on Pro and bonus credits. Claude: Claude Code from Pro, plus task hand-off, scheduling and Claude in Chrome. What this means: for working on a codebase, Claude Code is the documented tool; Perplexity Computer is aimed at finished artifacts.
- Data use. Perplexity: searches may be used to improve its AI by default, with an opt-out in Account Settings. Claude: training settings are not covered on the pricing page we checked. What this means: review the privacy settings in either app before pasting confidential material.
Which fits your real work?
Checking the numbers in a market report before a meeting. Perplexity fits, because each answer links its claims to sources you can open. Claude can search the web too, but its citation display is not established from our sources.
Turning research notes into a slide deck and a memo. Claude fits, since Slides and Docs are on its Free plan and Pro works inside Microsoft 365. Perplexity Pro can create documents, but Office integration is not listed.
Fixing a bug in your own repository. Claude Pro fits with Claude Code. Neither is a supported choice on a free plan, because Claude Code starts at Pro and Perplexity does not document a codebase tool.
Cost of getting the work done
With annual billing: Perplexity Pro is $17 a month and Max $167 a month. Claude Pro is $17 a month, $200 billed up front. Monthly billing: Claude Pro is $20 and Max starts at $100 for 5x or 20x Pro usage, billed monthly only; Perplexity's monthly prices were not shown on the page we checked.
Perplexity was also advertising limited-time Computer credits, $40 on Pro and $450 on Max, plus 4,000 and 35,000 bonus credits, with 10,000 monthly credits on Max. Claude Max includes $100 to $200 a month in API credits for the Claude Platform. Both list usage limits rather than fixed message counts, so plan around the stated multipliers and check limits after your first week.
Try both on the same small task
Suggested comparison, not a test we have run: on the free plans, ask both the same factual question in your field where you already know the answer, then check the sources rather than the wording.
- Each link opens and the page supports the sentence attached to it.
- At least one source is primary, such as the official announcement or text.
- Dates match the sources.
- Gaps are marked not found instead of filled with a guess; one run is a signal, not a ranking.
Decision checklist
Use the conditions that apply to you. Plan details are in our Perplexity profile and our Claude profile.
- If you mostly verify facts and need citations on every answer, start with Perplexity.
- If the deliverable is a document, deck or Office file, start with Claude.
- If you code, Claude Code requires Claude Pro.
- If you want to try several vendors' models in one subscription, Perplexity Pro lists them.
- If you prefer monthly billing, Claude shows a monthly price; confirm Perplexity's at checkout.
