What happened
Google DeepMind announced Genie 4 on October 27, 2026 as its new world model for real-time interactive simulation. It generates a world you can move through with keyboard controls and steer with text prompts, and DeepMind says it is natively multimodal, producing music, ambient sound and interactive dialogue together with the visuals.
According to DeepMind, Genie 4 builds on the Gemini family: Gemini Omni anchors scenes in real-world appearance and behaviour, while other Gemini models handle the reasoning that keeps a simulation coherent.
What it can do and who can use it
DeepMind highlights real-time steering in natural language, such as changing the weather, moving the camera or adding a person or object, with Gemini adapting the prompt to the scene. It also claims more realistic physics, including aerodynamics and collisions, more natural human characters, and dialogue that reacts to your inputs. All generated video and audio will carry SynthID watermarking.
Availability, per DeepMind's blog: Genie 4 is rolling out as a research preview to trusted testers first. It is coming soon to Google AI Ultra subscribers in Project Genie and to early access partners of the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, with a waitlist open for Project Genie. Pricing is not established on the blog.
What it means for you
DeepMind lists clear limits: its model page says Genie 4 supports a few minutes of continuous interaction rather than extended sessions, and details and object permanence can drift as a simulation runs longer, after several complex prompt edits or while moving around a scene, and complex physics, real-time audio accuracy, legible text, spatial accuracy and long-term consistency remain open research problems.
Trusted testers in film, journalism, game design and enterprise simulation are using it for previsualisation and quick prototypes, according to DeepMind. Until access widens, treat the demos as DeepMind's own showcase rather than a product you can evaluate.
