What happened
On October 26, 2026, OpenAI announced GPT-6.1 Terra and added it to the API changelog the same day. OpenAI describes it as a fast, efficient model combining visual reasoning, precise computer use and clearer writing, aimed at tasks such as drafting proposals, interpreting technical drawings, filling out forms and editing videos.
Terra is available from launch to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and to developers as gpt-6.1-terra. Standard API pricing is $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 for cached input and $5 per million output tokens, which OpenAI says is 50% below GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
What OpenAI claims
All figures below are OpenAI's own evaluations. On Agents' Last Exam at medium effort, OpenAI reports Terra 15 percentage points above GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third the cost, and says it completes tasks over three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. At maximum effort, OpenAI puts Terra's cost per task about nine times below Claude Opus 5.5 on that benchmark.
On OpenAI's internal set of error-inducing prompts, the error rate at low effort fell from 53.6% with GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7%. On Terminal-Bench 4.0 at maximum effort, Terra solves 50.3% of tasks against 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra. OpenAI also says Terra meets the Critical cybersecurity threshold in its Preparedness Framework and keeps the protections developed for GPT-6 Astra.
What it means for you
For ChatGPT users, OpenAI says the same Work and Codex allowance covers substantially more tasks with Terra than with GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra. OpenAI's help center lists Terra as a Work and Codex model, so it does not appear in regular chats.
For the most complex coding tasks, OpenAI itself points to GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra instead. Independent results are not established yet, so test Terra on your own documents or screens before moving a workflow.
