What happened
Midjourney launched its V8.2 image model on July 24, 2026, saying the update focuses on aesthetics, image quality and personalization. The company says images should be bolder and more varied, low-quality results in random situations should be greatly reduced, and personalization should follow your taste more closely, especially with many ratings on your profile. Creating V8.2 personalization profiles now draws on a larger pool of images.
Midjourney's Version documentation lists V8.2 as the current default model.
What changed since launch
On August 27, 2026, Midjourney opened testing of its V8.2 edit model to everyone. It supports editing images with written instructions, generating from up to four reference images at once in place of omni-reference, inpainting selected areas and outpainting the canvas, plus personalization, moodboards and style references. You can drag images into the prompt bar, click Edit in the lightbox, use the Edit tab or type --edit with an image URL on Discord. Midjourney's documentation says the edit model works with V8.1 and V8.2, does not support --tile, and that its results cannot be used with Remix.
On September 24, Midjourney said inpainting and outpainting now change only the selected pixels, so repeated edits do not degrade the image, and that --tile blends seamlessly in V8.1 and V8.2. On October 8 it began testing a Thinking Mode on alpha.midjourney.com, run with Rerun (Thinking) in the lightbox, which it says improves prompt accuracy, typography and coherence in its tests.
What it means for you
The new features come with existing subscriptions, which start with Basic at $10 a month. Thinking Mode is experimental and limited to the Alpha site, and Midjourney says it might later become broadly available or work as a way to add thinking after a job; whether it will cost extra is not established. Quality gains are Midjourney's own description, so compare a few of your saved prompts on V8.1 and V8.2 before switching a project.
