What you will decide with this guide
By the end you will know which ChatGPT Pro plan fits your Work and Codex use after OpenAI's October 29, 2026 change, and you will have checked your real allowance instead of guessing. This is for existing Pro subscribers and Plus users considering Pro. OpenAI does not publish exact allowance numbers per plan, so the decision rests on your own usage screen.
Before you start
OpenAI's Pro tiers article lists three monthly plans; annual billing is not offered.
- Pro 100: $100 a month, no Ultrafast.
- Pro 200: $200 a month, more usage than Pro 100, no Ultrafast.
- Pro 500: $500 a month, the highest included usage and Ultrafast for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
- A ChatGPT account signed in on the web, where Settings shows My Plan and Usage.
1. Know what changed on October 29
Pro 100 and Pro 500 now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance. On Pro 200, OpenAI cancelled the reduction it had announced by email on September 29: subscribers who already had the higher allowance keep it, and those on the lower allowance were doubled to match. Pro 200 is open to new subscribers again at the same $200.
Existing subscribers get the new allowance automatically, without waiting for renewal or resubscribing. Plus usage is unchanged. The weekly GPT-6 Pro message limits in Chat stay as they were on Pro 100 and Pro 500, while on Pro 200 the lower weekly limit now matches the higher one.
2. Read your own usage
Open Settings, then Usage in ChatGPT, or Usage & Billing in Codex, and note how much of your Work and Codex allowance a typical week uses. OpenAI warns that twice the allowance does not guarantee twice the completed tasks, because usage depends on the model, context, reasoning, tools, caching and speed mode.
3. Decide whether you need Ultrafast
Among Pro plans only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast, which you select in the model picker. For GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol it uses included allowance at eight times the Standard rate, then purchased credits at six times the Standard credit rate. Fast mode draws allowance at 2.5 times. Buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock Ultrafast.
4. A worked example
Suggested example, not a recorded case: a developer on Pro 100 uses Codex daily and reached about 90% of the allowance before October 29. After the doubling, the same week should land near half of the new allowance, so staying on Pro 100 is reasonable. A team lead who needs Astra answers in seconds during live reviews would need Pro 500 for Ultrafast and should budget for its eightfold allowance draw.
5. Check the decision and change plan
Your choice holds if a normal week stays clearly under your allowance and you do not need Ultrafast. If you regularly hit limits, credits can extend Codex, ChatGPT Work and the Word, Excel and PowerPoint add-ins after the included allowance, though they do not cover every model or feature. To switch plans, open Settings, then My Plan.
- A typical week uses well under 100% of the allowance.
- You know whether any of your work needs Ultrafast.
- You checked whether credits or a higher plan cost less for your peak weeks.
- Your plan change shows under Settings, My Plan.
Common problems and fixes
A model shows as unavailable: you reached that model's allowance; ChatGPT shows the reset time when available, and you can switch to another model. Support cannot reset limits, but it can investigate usage counted incorrectly.
You are on Pro 200 and see no change: OpenAI says active subscribers receive the updated allowance without cancelling; cancelling and resubscribing gives the same allowance as other Pro 200 subscribers. Subscriptions bought through Apple or Google Play are cancelled in those stores.
