What you will have at the end

You will have a named dot set up in ChatGPT, connected to the apps one project needs, with rules for what it may do alone, and a first project under way that you can review. OpenAI describes a dot as an always-on agent that keeps working between conversations, using its own cloud computer and browser, and brings results and decisions back to you.

Before you start

Check access first, because availability is narrower than ChatGPT itself.

  • Pro: users aged 18 and older, outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK.
  • Business Premium: supported ChatGPT regions, subject to workspace eligibility.
  • Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare: a beta that an admin must enable; it is off by default.
  • The ChatGPT mobile app (iOS or Android), the desktop app or a desktop browser; dots do not work on mobile web.
  • The rollout is gradual, so access may take several days to reach your account.

1. Create and name your dot

Open the ChatGPT mobile app on iOS or Android, the desktop app or chatgpt.com/dots in a desktop browser, and follow the onboarding prompts. Give the dot a name; its default handle is @yourname-dot, and a custom name does not need to end in -dot. You can pick a character or pet as its avatar. After setup you can talk to it, or call it, from the ChatGPT apps.

2. Connect only the apps the project needs

On mobile, open the dot's profile and go to Customize, then Plugins; review each app's permissions before connecting. OpenAI notes that a dot can review connected information proactively and form memories from it, and that disconnecting an app does not delete what the dot already learned; only resetting the dot does. Access to your own computer is optional, starts off, and is granted from the desktop app with Allow access.

3. Set custom rules before real work

Open Customize, then Custom rules, and decide for each sensitive action whether the dot may act without asking, act if pre-approved, ask first or hand off to you. Pre-approved means you explicitly asked for the action in your prompt. OpenAI says actions that affect your accounts or share information also pass through Auto-review, and steps such as changing a password always stay with you.

4. Hand it a first project

Suggested example, not a recorded run: give the dot a bounded, checkable project where the input already exists, for example turning an interview transcript into show notes and social posts, which is one of OpenAI's own examples. Attach the file with the + button in the conversation.

5. Check the work and its cost

Open the task from the dot's profile and review the files and results. Conversations with your dot do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits, but tasks it starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work do. Your first dot is included in Pro and Business Premium, with extended limits for deeper work in the first month after launch.

  • Every timestamp and quote matches the transcript.
  • Nothing was published or sent without your approval.
  • The dot listed the points it was unsure about.
  • Activity under Scheduled matches what you asked for.

Common problems and fixes

You cannot find your dot: confirm the account and workspace, then open chatgpt.com/dots; in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, Pro accounts do not have access. The dot cannot use a website: its cloud browser has its own sign-ins, so complete the sign-in request or use takeover, then return control.

An approved action is still blocked: open the task for a separate sign-in, connection or approval request, and check whether a custom rule requires an explicit instruction; asking for a draft does not authorise sending it. To start over, Reset deletes the dot with its conversations, memories and scheduled tasks.
