The short answer: ChatGPT for coding and document work, Grok for live X and web news

Choose ChatGPT if you want unlimited GPT-6 text chat without paying, or coding and agent work through Codex and ChatGPT Work in the same plan. Choose Grok if you follow news and trends as they happen, because it searches the web and X live, or if you already pay for X features, which Grok's paid plans include. At $8 a month both have an entry tier; neither vendor publishes quality results that settle the choice.

What was compared and how

Task: everyday individual use, meaning writing, research on current topics, working with files, image and video creation and light coding. We compared the consumer apps on the web and mobile and their individual plans (ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro; Grok free access plus Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra), not the APIs or business plans.

Evidence: OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing page, xAI's Grok product page and the grok.com plans page for the United States, all read on October 25, 2026. This is a documentation comparison. AppFor.ai has not run both assistants on the same inputs, so nothing below is a measured quality or speed result. Prices are monthly US prices before tax.

Compare the same criteria

Each criterion states what each vendor documents and what it means for the task. Where a page does not say something, we write that it is not established.

  • Free access. ChatGPT: a Free plan with unlimited text chats with GPT-6 within abuse guardrails, and limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, Codex and ChatGPT Work. Grok: xAI's product page invites you to try Grok at no cost on the web, iOS and Android, without listing what the free tier includes. What this means: ChatGPT lists which features Free includes; xAI does not.
  • Current events. ChatGPT: search is listed among its features. Grok: xAI says it searches the web and X live, with citations, and integrates X posts for breaking news and trends. What this means: when the story is still unfolding on X, Grok reads that source directly; treat early posts as leads until a cited report confirms them.
  • Writing and files. ChatGPT: projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs from Plus; input limits of about 12 pages per message on Free with the instant model, about 40 on Go and Plus and about 250 on Pro. Grok: canvas for long-form writing, file and PDF analysis and custom instructions; file size limits are not established. What this means: for long documents, ChatGPT documents its limits, so you can tell in advance which plan fits.
  • Images and video. ChatGPT: limited image creation on Free, more on Go and Plus, unlimited on Pro; video generation is not listed on the pricing page. Grok: Grok Imagine creates images and videos up to 15 seconds from text or reference photos, with 1080p video from the Super plan. What this means: for short video clips, only Grok includes generation in the plans we compared.
  • Coding and agents. ChatGPT: limited Codex and ChatGPT Work on Free, expanded on Plus, longer sessions on Pro. Grok: code generation in chat, Grok Build in the shared usage pool, and cloud agents, code hosting and AI code reviews from Premium. What this means: both cover coding; ChatGPT starts agent work on its free tier, Grok from $30 Premium.
  • Bundled extras. ChatGPT: Go may include ads. Grok: paid plans include X benefits, such as fewer timeline ads on Plus and ad-free scrolling on most surfaces from Premium, and the Plus plan lists Cursor and Grok API access in its shared usage pool. What this means: Grok's price is easier to justify if you already pay for X features.

Which fits your real work?

Following a breaking story. Grok fits if the first reports appear on X, because live X search is its documented focus. ChatGPT works with web search. In both cases, open the sources before you repeat a claim.

Summarising a 60-page PDF report. ChatGPT Plus fits, since OpenAI lists about 40 pages per input on Go and Plus for the instant model and more for reasoning models. Grok supports PDF analysis, but its page limit is not established, so test a large file before relying on it.

Fixing a script or building a small app. ChatGPT fits on a small budget, because Codex is included from Free. Grok fits if you want cloud agents and code reviews in a $30 Premium plan that also covers X benefits.

Cost of getting the work done

ChatGPT, monthly: Free; Go $8, which may include ads; Plus $20; Pro from $100, with a choice of three usage tiers.

Grok, monthly: free to try; Plus $8; Premium $30 with 4x the usage of Plus; Super $100 with 15x; Ultra $200 with 50x. At the time of checking, the first month of Premium, Super and Ultra was offered at 50% off. Prices exclude taxes and fees.

Like for like at the entry level, ChatGPT Go and Grok Plus both cost $8. In the middle, ChatGPT Plus is $20 and Grok Premium $30. Neither vendor states usage as a number of messages, so how much work each tier completes is not established.

Try both on the same small task

Suggested comparison, not a test we have run: pick a news story from the last 24 hours that you can check yourself, give both free versions the prompt below, then compare the answers with the original reporting.

  • Every factual claim has a source you can open.
  • Dates and numbers match the cited source.
  • Posts or reports that are rumours are labelled as such.
  • Count the corrections you needed; one run is a signal for your topic, not a ranking.

What would change the choice

Check these conditions before you subscribe. For plans and features of each product, see our ChatGPT profile and our Grok profile.

  • If you never use X, Grok's bundled X benefits and X search matter less.
  • If you need documented file limits for long reports, ChatGPT publishes them per plan; Grok's are not established.
  • If you want short AI video in the same subscription, Grok Imagine is included; ChatGPT's pricing page lists images only.
  • If you need API access for your own software, compare the OpenAI and xAI developer pricing instead; this article covers the consumer apps.
